Roy Hodgson accepts he has a challenge to overcome at the heart of England's defence, but tempting back John Terry is not a solution that has seriously crossed his mind.
Not so long ago Sol Campbell, Rio Ferdinand and Terry were the kind of players at the Three Lions' disposal - options they would love having conceded four goals in the friendlies with Germany and Holland.
Hodgson bristled at questions about his side's defensive solidity, pointing at the way the goals arrived, previous matches and overall pattern of play, but accepted there is work to be done at centre-back ahead of Euro 2016.
The Italy manager, who will take charge of the club after Euro 2016, is said to have visited Cobham on Tuesday afternoon with technical director Michael Emenalo, according to the Daily Mail, as he seeks a series of meeting with a number of senior players.John Terry, Eden Hazard, Diego Costa and Nemnaja Matic are all linked away from Chelsea next season - for one reason or another - and Conte, 46, wants to speak to them all to decide on their futures.Club legend John Terry, 35, has still not been offered a new deal and his future at the club now hangs on the former Juventus manager.Eden Hazard, whose form has spectacularly fallen off just a year since being named the Premier League Player of the Year, has been continually linked with Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, with some reports indicating he no longer wants to stay at Stamford Bridge."And I think (John) Stones, who has not played many games recently, showed a lot of assurance and showed signs of the type of player he can be.
"Your point that we haven't got the left-sided one is quite right but there is nothing I can do about that unless suddenly in the next five weeks some brilliant English left-sided centre-back appears on the scene and I don't anticipate that." Hodgson said it is a "fact of life" that there are no English left-sided centre-backs playing at the level of those currently involved, but it was pointed out that former captain Terry fits the bill. "But I'm not 100 per cent certain that outside of John Terry, who because he retired so long ago he doesn't feature in my thinking very often, (there is anyone) but I can't deny that is a valid point.
"He is a left-sided centre-half, although not a left-sided player.
Incoming Chelsea manager Antonio Conte made a surpise visit to the club's training ground as he prepares to take over at Stamford Bridge in the summer, according to reports.
Diego Costa is said to want a return to Atletico Madrid, while Nemanja Matic has grown frustrated this season after falling down the pecking order behind John Obi Mikel - the Serbian has also been in awful form all season.
Chelsea have already been linked with big-money moves for Everton striker Romelu Lukaku and Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan, with Conte expected to shake-up a squad that has underperformed and grown stale.
